Some Patterns Are Fun Patterns

Fun surface patternPatterns come in and out of fashion, we all know that, but it is also impossible to design anything without being influenced by what has gone before. My main influence is mid-century which I believe produced some of the best and most outstanding patterns, many of which have lasted through to today. A major influence on the patterns of the 1950s was the work of modern artists who, for the most part, were influenced very strongly by the styles that had gone before.

It is from this rich legacy that I have produced this design which uses an easy motif with a regular and simple repeat. It was so interesting that I decided to devote more of my time to developing ideas that came to the mid-century from the earlier years and this coincides, as I may have mentioned, with the expansion of my palette to include colours other than those of the British Standard.

This design was intended as a fabric design for soft furnishings or possibly as a fashion fabric. The colouring is dark and, if you look closely, you will see that there is a texture to the background which, while giving the effect of material, also adds a solid look which enables the motif to rise from the backdrop. I am presently working on using this material in a 3D set which I hope to bring you shortly.

If you wish, you can also see larger versions of this and, of course, my other designs and patterns for interiors on my Flickr page, a link to which is here.

Interesting pattern xar030

This is an interesting and quite fun design but I did recently. It is a modern design, not really a 20th-century design and so, of course, should not really be here.

However, despite the comments above, I have included it because it is a design that I did that I particularly liked. It’s not a free design and is available in two colours, one of which worked very well and one of which may not have worked quite so well.

Click the image above and you will see a much larger version or you can look on Flickr here and here.

A fun fabric pattern xar005

A fun fabric

This pattern, xar005, is designed as a fun fabric pattern and is, of course, a modern day pattern and not a mid-century one.

I like branching out every now and again and trying something different and this time the design turned out to be a rather fun pattern which I think would be suitable for a fabric. I did toy with the idea of making it a wallpaper pattern and decided finally against it although, uploading the swatches to Flickr, I did begin to have second thoughts.

This particular pattern is available for 3-D work under a Creative Commons license and uploaded to Flickr are three backgrounds, a bump image and the tile.
