Dark Wallpaper

Aside from providing decoration for walls to make them look better than simply being painted, wallpaper also has the effect of making the walls in a room look lighter which has the overall effect of making the room look larger.

Of course if you use wallpaper with a black background then the reverse should happen and the room should look smaller and this is indeed, what usually occurs. However it is possible to use quite dark wallpaper on just one wall and for this to provide a contrast to the rest of the room and this is what I have done here.

The pattern is influenced by early mid-century designs although the final implementation has more of my own ideas and colours. It is used on quite a large scale to provide a statement in the room and in this case, although you can only see part of it, the room is obviously fairly large and impressive. The wallpaper provides an eye-catching backdrop which acts as a foil for the pictures on the wall and for the bright large-scale cushions on the sofa all of which play their part in adding to the drama of the scene. This is a very robust, contrasty, masculine room and would not be to everyone’s taste although it was a fun room to do.

As ever, you can also see larger versions of this and, of course, my other work on my Flickr page which is here.
