Rooms are never big enough, are they? We always seem to want more, we often look at the space we have and decide that it’s not enough.

One way round this, of course, is to move house but these days moving is an expensive option and so other alternatives need to be found. Mid-century householders, of course, faced the same problem but they seem to have found a neat solution that, compared with moving, is both simple and inexpensive.

Using a large pattern seems to me to add space and make the dimensions of the room look instantly larger. This is one of my usual mid-century rooms and here I have created a large, 1970s inspired motif for a pattern that is on a light background. Straight away the room is much airier and brighter, especially when combined with the bright curtains and cushions.

As ever, you can also see larger versions of all these images and more on our Flickr page which is here.
